This morning was quite exciting watching the USA soccer team advance in the World Cup. Some bloggers and analyst called it a Hollywood finish. Most Espn commentators seemed to think it will do a lot for soccer in the US. Although if you watched 'Around the Horn' and listened to Bill Plaschke, who didn't give the US any credit at all. And he got slammed for it by his peers on the show and was first to exit today. I say he should take his column and shove it. I lost any respect for the guy if I even had any to begin with.
Ok that rant is out, now back to the 'I think I might begin to like soccer' now. I remember in '94' when I first recall hearing of the World Cup. I was heavy into collecting sports cards, mainly NFL football and NBA basketball cards, and all of a sudden these inserts from World Cup players started appearing in the packs. I had to ask my partner in collections who and what the hell these cards were. I remember seeing some red headed dude with shaggy hair and a few other unknowns at the time, their faces on the front of my cards. WTH I thought, I'm buying football cards why are these appearing.
The rest is history of course. As a collector it didn't take me long to do a little research and learn some more about soccer or football as the other nations refer to it. Needless to say though I quickly lost interest and continued on my merry way paying little attention until this year.
I love our team and if they don't go any further than the next round then I am still happy with their accomplishment after today. I say Go USA! USA! USA! USA!....
